Courtney Lewis To Be Assistant Conductor in 2014–15

Courtney Lewis NY Philharmonic

Courtney Lewis, 29, has been named New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor beginning in September 2014. Current Assistant Conductor Case Scaglione, 31, will be promoted to Associate Conductor, also to begin in September 2014. They will assist Music Director Alan Gilbert and all guest conductors, and will lead educational events, including School Day Concerts and Young People’s Concerts.

Joshua Weilerstein, who has been Assistant Conductor along with Mr. Scaglione since September 2011, will conclude his tenure as Assistant Conductor at the end of the 2013–14 season.

“We discovered Courtney Lewis after an extensive audition process, and he emerged as a very promising future colleague as our next Assistant Conductor,” said Music Director Alan Gilbert.

Since 2009, Courtney Lewis has served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra. He has also served as a Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Lewis is the founder and music director of Boston’s Discovery Ensemble, a chamber orchestra dedicated not only to giving concerts of contemporary and established repertoire at the highest level of musical and technical excellence, but also to bringing live music into the least privileged parts of Boston with workshops in local schools.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Lewis studied at University of Cambridge and Royal Northern College of Music.

Update: Here's a review of Lewis conducting the Discovery Ensemble Sunday in Boston.

Birthday Case

Case Scaglione

Join us in wishing a very happy birthday to NY Phil Assistant Conductor Case Scaglione. He’s had a big year, stepping in to lead the first work on a program for a conductor who was stuck in traffic; taking the podium to lead music by Stravinsky and Shostakovich; and leading Young People’s Concerts and School Day Concerts. And that was just at the Philharmonic! He has spent his summer away from Avery Fisher Hall leading orchestras from Baltimore to Shanghai. Get to know the Texas native, and check out his upcoming schedule.

Triumphant Conclusion in Vienna

Alan Gilbert and the Orchestra conclude their three-concert stint at the Vienna Konzerthaus with works by The Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence Christopher Rouse, Mozart, and Musorgsky. The performance brings the EUROPE / SPRING 2013 tour to a close, and the musicians head to New York to resume performing for their hometown audience.
