Alan Gilbert Receives National Arts Club Medal of Honor

Music Director Alan Gilbert and National Arts Club President Linda Zagaria

The National Arts Club has bestowed Alan Gilbert with its Medal of Honor in Music as he begins his farewell season as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. The honor recognizes Alan’s wide-ranging contributions to the Philharmonic and symphonic music in the 21st century, from creating new ways for audiences to experience the art form to music education, through his position as Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at The Juilliard School. Past recipients include Plácido Domingo, James Levine, Daniel Barenboim, Van Cliburn, Isaac Stern, and Emanuel Ax.

The presentation was on October 13 at the Club’s Gramercy Park clubhouse. It included speeches by Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations H.E. Mr. Jan Eliasson and Juilliard School Provost and Dean Ara Guzelimian, as well as a piano performance by New York Philharmonic Artist-in-Association Inon Barnatan.

Congratulations, Alan!

PHOTOS: Inaugural Michigan Performance Residency

This weekend the New York Philharmonic went back to school — to teach, perform, and even take to the gridiron. The Orchestra trekked to Ann Arbor for the kick-off of its five-year partnership with the University Musical Society of the University of Michigan, in conjunction with the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, which will bring the Philharmonic to this buzzing college town for performance residencies and immersive education activities. It was homecoming weekend, so in addition to playing three concerts, Philharmonic musicians performed in The Big House, the largest stadium in the United States, with the Michigan Marching Band, chorus, and alumni, led by Music Director Alan Gilbert. Go Blue!

And the Awards Go to...

No, we’re not talking about the Oscars, but our local award celebrating the performing arts.

Two of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Awards (named for a former Lincoln Center Chairman) have been given to musicians who are scheduled to appear with the Philharmonic in the coming months: Inon Barnatan, the Philharmonic nominee, who will perform Ravel March 19–24, and Julia Bullock, Juilliard’s nominee, who will join us in July for the 50th anniversary of the Concerts in the Parks

Each recipient not only receives an enormous compliment, but a grant to support career advancement and/or future study. For information about attending the ceremony, on March 2, visit LincolnCenter.org/SegalAwards.
