VIDEO: It Takes Yo-Yo To Tango

When Yo-Yo Ma premiered Osvaldo Golijov's Azul, the Los Angeles Times couldn't say enough good things about the collaboration: "Of all the music written for Ma, this one captures him most fully.... Ma and Golijov are artists made for each other.”

Yo-Yo Ma headlines the Philharmonic's Opening Gala with Azul and Piazzolla's La serie del Ángel, and Alan Gilbert can't wait: "It's a dream to have Yo-Yo Ma opening the season."

Hear more of Alan's thoughts on Yo-Yo, Golijov, and Piazzolla in this video.

Visit with Dvořák in New York

Dvorak Family in New York

Principal Cello Carter Brey plays Dvořák’s Cello Concerto for our Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks programs throughout the five boroughs this week. The work has a direct connection to our fair city, as Dvořák composed the piece here during his tenure as director of the National Conservatory of Music (1892–95). He and his family lived in a townhouse at 327 E. 17th Street, near the conservatory, and a statue in his honor stands in Stuyvesant Square, with the street alongside named Dvořák Place.

Arrival and Two Concerts in Vienna

The Philharmonic arrives in Vienna, the final stop of the EUROPE / SPRING 2013 tour, to commemorate the centennial of the Vienna Konzerthaus. Joshua Bell and Emanuel Ax join Alan Gilbert and the Orchestra for two of the three concerts in the city of music.

Dortmund and Berlin

The EUROPE / SPRING 2013 tour has embarked on its German leg. Emanuel Ax joined the Orchestra for concerts in Dortmund and Berlin, and a quartet of Philharmonic principal players were musical emissaries at the U.S. Ambassador to Germany’s Berlin residence.

Grandeur and a Groundbreaker in Dresden

This week the Orchestra traveled to Dresden for two concerts, each with a very different flavor. The first featured Mozart, Bloch, and Musorgsky at Dresden's grand Semperoper. The second, Webcast live around the world from Volkswagen's Transparent Factory, featured Magnus Lindberg's theatrical, out-of-the-box Kraft,as well as Christopher Rouse's Prospero's Rooms and Bernstein's Serenade with violinist Joshua Bell.
