PHOTOS: 2017 Concerts in the Parks

The 52nd summer of the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks, Presented by Didi and Oscar Schafer, brought almost 100,000 music lovers to hear the New York Philharmonic perform for free in every New York City borough. In his final appearances in New York as Music Director, Alan Gilbert led masterworks by Dvořák, Bernstein, and Gershwin — all written in New York and premiered by the Philharmonic. Local bands gave pre-concert performances, and audiences joined the Orchestra in community performances of the “Goin’ Home” theme from Dvořák’s New World Symphony, all part of The New World Initiative and the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season celebration of its hometown.

VIDEO: Alan Gilbert Season Finale: A Concert for Unity

On June 10, 2017, at David Geffen Hall, Alan Gilbert conducted the final subscription concert of his tenure as Music Director. He led the Orchestra, joined by musicians from orchestras around the world, in Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, celebrating the power of music to build bridges and unite people across borders.

The musicians included members of orchestras from Australia, Brazil, China, Cuba, France, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The concert was broadcast live on Facebook.

In his final subscription concerts as Music Director, Alan Gilbert concludes his eight years with the Philharmonic with a message about the power of music to build bridges and unite people across borders.

Alan Gilbert Season Finale: A Concert for Unity, June 8–10, features Mahler’s Seventh Symphony performed by the Philharmonic alongside 23 orchestral musicians from Australia, Brazil, China, Cuba, France, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, Venezuela, the U.K., and the U.S.

June 8 also featured cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Silk Road Ensemble members, Philharmonic musicians, and Alan Gilbert on violin in two works commissioned by Silkroad. June 9 features trumpet player Wynton Marsalis. Mahler’s Seventh with the combined orchestra stands alone on June 10.

N.Y. Philharmonic Musicians Visit Shanghai Orchestra Academy in Advance of July Residency

 

New York Philharmonic musicians travel to Shanghai four times each season for master classes, coachings, mock auditions, seminars, and more as part of the Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Residency Partnership. The most recent visit was in May and featured violin Anna Rabinova, flute Yoobin Son, Associate Principal Bassoon Kim Laskowski, and Associate Principal Trombone Colin Williams. The visit anticipated the Philharmonic’s third annual performance residency in Shanghai, July 2–8, featuring Alan Gilbert’s final appearances as Philharmonic Music Director in Shanghai. One performance will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in the Asian Premiere of Marsalis’s The Jungle (Symphony No. 4), commissioned and premiered by the Philharmonic in December 2016 as the first of The New York Commissions, part of the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season. Alan Gilbert takes his final bows in New York City as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic this month, starting with three performances of Wagner’s Das Rheingold featuring former Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence and friend Eric Owens as Wotan, June 1–6. He will also lead the Philharmonic joined by musicians from orchestras around the world for Alan Gilbert Season Finale: A Concert for Unity, June 8–10. Finally, Alan Gilbert says goodbye to the people of New York in the final Concerts in the Parks of his tenure, June 13–18.

Principal Cello Carter Brey and N.Y. Philharmonic Musicians To Perform at Sandy Hook Benefit

 

On June 4 — the same week that the full Orchestra performs concerts celebrating music’s power to unite and heal — Principal Cello Carter Brey and some of his fellow New York Philharmonic musicians will manifest this power for the community of survivors of the Sandy Hook tragedy.

They will perform at Chasing the Music, a benefit for the CMAK Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation, founded by Stephen and Rebecca Kowalski to celebrate the life of their son, Chase, through programs that support the health and wellness of children and their families. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The musicians will perform Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals, with Sandy Hook Elementary School student artwork projected onstage to illustrate each of the movements. The Philharmonic musicians joining Brey are Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Assistant Concertmaster Michelle Kim, Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young, Principal Bass Timothy Cobb, Principal Flute Robert Langevin, and Associate Principal Percussion Daniel Druckman. The other musicians are pianists Misha and Cipa Dichter, clarinetist Pavel Vinnitsky, and percussionist Benjamin Cornavaca.

“The opportunity that Carter Brey has provided to CMAK through the Chasing the Music event is a testament to his generosity and good intentions to support the work of the Foundation,” said Rebecca Kowalski. “Being able to include Newtown students in the event and expose them to these masters of music that will perform is an honor.”

Musical Postcards

Throughout this 175th anniversary season, the New York Philharmonic has been celebrating its hometown, as well as exploring the meaning of home, through The New World Initiative.

This past Saturday, a very special Saturday Matinee concert gave audiences a particularly resonant look at the idea of “home” when Philharmonic musicians and Teaching Artists performed works written by students of the Very Young Composer’s Program (VYC), aged 9–22, some of which were inspired by original compositions by Middle Eastern children in refugee camps.

The concert was a result of the Musical Postcards program, through which VYC participants correspond with children in other countries and ultimately compose music in reaction to pieces written by their counterparts abroad. Works on Saturday’s program included “Musical Postcards” from New York composers to those in Venezuela, Israel, and Syria as well as a work by an Afghan refugee.

Jennifer Sime, Senior Vice President, United States Programs, of the International Rescue Committee, opened the concert with remarks about the current refugee crisis.

As Jon Deak, Artistic Director of VYC, said: “The spirit of these displaced children inspires us. Our New York kids have expressed solidarity by answering their counterparts with their own music.”

The performers, all of whom donated their services, encouraged the audience to reach out to children in need, naming three possible organizations to support: Doctors Without Borders, New York Philharmonic Education Fund, and International Rescue Committee.

“The healing and creative power of children is a wonder to behold. We feel that now, more than ever, it is important to listen to them,” Deak said.

Isaac Thompson Appointed Vice President, Artistic Planning at the New York Philharmonic

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Isaac Thompson as the Orchestra’s Vice President, Artistic Planning, beginning in July. Mr. Thompson will work closely with Music Director Designate Jaap van Zweden and incoming President & CEO Deborah Borda on implementing the organization’s artistic vision, including through programming, artistic planning, and the engagement of guest artists.

Mr. Thompson has served as the director of Artistic Administration for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati May Festival since 2015, after serving as vice president of Artistic Planning for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. 

“As we welcome Isaac Thompson to the New York Philharmonic family, I very much look forward to an exciting and productive relationship,” said van Zweden. “We already share a similar musical philosophy, which will only grow and strengthen with time.” 

“Isaac brings just the right set of skills, energy, and vision to this pivotal position,” said Borda. “Although I’m not officially on board until the fall, it gives me special pleasure to begin assembling our full team and to fill critical positions.”
