Music Academy of the West Fellows Conclude Immersion with New York Philharmonic

For the fourth consecutive year, the New York Philharmonic hosted a group of fellows from Music Academy of the West selected to participate in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program — an immersion in the life of an orchestra musician.

From January 18 to 29, ten fellows, selected by audition, came to New York as Zarin Mehta Fellows, working closely with Philharmonic musicians in one-on-one lessons, mock auditions, and chamber music coaching. They even rehearsed and played alongside Philharmonic musicians in selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet for the Orchestra’s January 25–27 subscription concerts conducted by Stéphane Denève. “Different musical tableaux sprung vividly to life bringing to mind choreographic images,” concluded the review in Bachtrack. “One couldn’t ask for much more.” Read More...

The New York Philharmonic’s second performance residency at the Music Academy of the West in sunny Santa Barbara last week began with a concert for the history books. Alan Gilbert led the Orchestra in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for the last time as its Music Director during the Music Academy of the West’s 70th Anniversary Community Concert, which broke the record for the city’s largest classical concert. Also that week, Philharmonic musicians served as guest faculty and selected Fellows for the 2018 New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, the New York Philharmonic String Quartet performed, and Alan Gilbert led the Academy Festival Orchestra in the festival’s season finale.

From January 6 to 15 eleven fellows, selected by audition, came to New York as Zarin Mehta Fellows, working closely with Philharmonic musicians in one-on-one lessons, mock auditions, and chamber music coaching. 2017 Zarin Mehta Fellows from Music Academy of the West Named

New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program

Ten students from Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West have been selected to participate in the third year of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program as Zarin Mehta Fellows in January 2017.

They will travel to New York for a ten-day training program, including rehearsing and playing alongside Philharmonic musicians in Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 for the subscription concerts January 11–14, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert.

Described by Gilbert as “a window into the real life of the orchestral musician,” the Fellowship allows students to learn directly from Philharmonic musicians, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will immerse them in all aspects of an orchestral player’s life, from audition to performance.

The lucky ten: Kevin Chen, violin; Minji Choi, cello; Michael Daley, percussion; Kaelan Decman, double bass; Ao Peng, viola; Emily Switzer, violin; Alexander Volkov, violin; Jack Walters, clarinet; Justin Woo, violin; and Hyeree Yu, viola. 2016 Global Academy Fellow Rainer Saville, trumpet, deferred his participation and will be joining the Global Academy in 2017.

Congratulations, and see you in New York!

Global Academy Update

New York Philharmonic Global Academy

Alan Gilbert’s appearance earlier this week at Music Academy of the West — a Philharmonic Global Academy partner — has garnered raves! Gilbert led the Academy Festival Orchestra in a concert featuring works by Berg, Haydn, and Beethoven that was described by the Santa Barbara Independent as “an outstanding program” in which “Gilbert brought these excellent young musicians together in a thoroughly joyous achievement in music making.”

Earlier this year, nine musicians from Music Academy of the West traveled to New York to participate in the Philharmonic’s Global Academy Fellowship program as part of the second year of the four-year partnership.

Musically excellent, educationally inspiring experiences like these are precisely why the Philharmonic founded the Global Academy. Learn more about it here, and watch out for the return to Santa Barbara by the full Philharmonic next summer, for the 70th Anniversary of Music Academy of the West.

Zarin Mehta Fellows: Orchestral Immersion in Pictures

The second class of Zarin Mehta Fellows, dedicated orchestral musicians-in-training, have completed their 10-day participation in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship program. These nine instrumentalists, selected by audition, hail from Music Academy of the West, the first American partner in the program.

The Zarin Mehta Fellows, experiencing New York’s belated winter in a brisk contrast from Santa Barbara’s sunny disposition, enjoyed a uniquely intimate and rigorous immersion in the life of an orchestral musician that will enrich their musical and professional development. Here’s a look back.

They’re coming.

Ten students from Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West, that is.

The lucky ten are coming to the Philharmonic January 2–12 for the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, an immersion in all aspects of an orchestral player’s life, from audition to performance. They are the second group of Zarin Mehta Fellows from Music Academy of the West, a partner in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy.

They’ll take lessons from, rehearse with, and shadow Philharmonic musicians, rehearse and perform in a private chamber concert at The Morgan Library & Museum, take mock auditions, and join Philharmonic Teaching Artists at schools in Queens and the Bronx.
