PHOTOS: Shanghai First Annual Performance Residency Kicks Off

Where in the world is the New York Philharmonic? In Shanghai, for the first annual performance residency of the four-year Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Residency Partnership. So far the Orchestra has performed three concerts: Alan Gilbert led two all-American concerts, one on the Fourth of July, with violinist Joshua Bell as soloist, and Charles Dutoit led Brahms, Stravinsky, and Ravel with pianist Emanuel Ax as soloist. This collaboration, part of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy, also involves extensive education activities, in which Philharmonic musicians are teaching and coaching Shanghai Orchestra Academy students.

The mercury just cracked 60 here in New York, and our summer travel plans are already in motion! Today, the Philharmonic announced details of the Orchestra’s two performance residencies this summer: in Shanghai and Santa Barbara.

Global Academy Summer Highlights

Shanghai Orchestra Academy and Residency Partnership (July 4–10)
Alan Gilbert will bring Philharmonic flair to Shanghai this summer in the first of four annual performance residencies in Shanghai. The Orchestra will perform two all-American music concerts (one on the Fourth of July, no less!), a Young People’s Concert featuring New York City–centric music (July 9), and a concert of Mozart and Mahler (July 10). Charles Dutoit will also conduct the Orchestra in a concert of Philharmonic greatest hits: Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Emanuel Ax, Stravinsky’s Petrushka, and Ravel’s La Valse (July 5). In between performances and rehearsals the New York Philharmonic musicians will fan the musical fires of students in the Shanghai Orchestra Academy, leading masterclasses, coaching chamber groups, and teaching lessons.

Music Academy of the West Partnership (August 1–8)
Coming directly from the mountains of Vail, Colorado, the Orchestra will take root in sunny Santa Barbara at the renowned Music Academy of the West. The New York Philharmonic will start off its residency with a side-by-side reading with the Academy Festival Orchestra. Alan Gilbert will then lead the Philharmonic in its debut at the Santa Barbara Bowl performing works by Barber, Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Sousa. Philharmonic Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Principal Cello Carter Brey, Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill, Principal Tuba Alan Baer, and Associate Principal Percussion Daniel Druckman will perform in a chamber music concert on August 4. They will also be Music Academy of the West guest faculty for a week, giving private lessons, lectures, master classes, and chamber music coachings.

SLIDESHOW: A Glamorous Opening Gala

The New York Philharmonic launched its 2014–15 season last night! Following a glittering pre-concert reception, the Opening Gala centered on La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema, in which Music Director Alan Gilbert and the Orchestra were joined by a starry array of artists — Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, and Josh Groban plus Martin Scorsese and Alec Baldwin. Afterward, the Gala audience crossed the Lincoln Center Plaza for a post-concert dinner in the David H. Koch Theater. Echoing the festive occasion, the Empire State Building shone Philharmonic red last night in celebration of the new season. Relive the festivities!

What Made Joshua Bell's 'Classical Music New York' for New York Post?

Joshua Bell NY Post NY Philharmonic

Our good friend Joshua Bell has given a tour of his "Classical Music New York" to the New York Post, and we were a couple of the points on his map!

First up: the Great Lawn of Central Park, about which he recalled:

The New York Philharmonic has a series there in the summer — it was probably the largest audience I ever played for…. In August, 2001 I was going to play the 'West Side Story Suite' — quintessential New York — and it was thunderstorming like something out of 'The Wizard of Oz.' Literally five minutes before the concert, the sky cleared…Kristin Chenoweth was singing at that concert and we did a duet together. She and I ended up dating after that for a year.

Then, there's our home, Lincoln Center, where he joined in our Opening Gala Concert this past September:

At the after-dinner party, there was Alec Baldwin, and Kathleen Turner. Woody Allen was sitting behind me. I always thought he must be neurotically reclusive or something, but he was easy to talk to. I told him my parents saw him doing stand-up in New York [decades ago]. He seemed pleased.

Josh returns to Lincoln Center to perform with us starting Wed. (the run is Nov. 12–15 & 18) — he'll be the soloist in Glazunov's Violin Concerto. Join him, and us!

The New York Philharmonic's 2013–14 season kicked off yesterday with a full day of celebratory activities: a Free Dress Rehearsal, courtesy of the Philharmonic and Global Sponsor Credit Suisse, complete with chocolates and tango dancers; buzzing pre-concert receptions; the Opening Gala Concert itself headlined by Yo-Yo Ma; and the post-concert dinner. Relive the day's highlights!

Arrival and Two Concerts in Vienna

The Philharmonic arrives in Vienna, the final stop of the EUROPE / SPRING 2013 tour, to commemorate the centennial of the Vienna Konzerthaus. Joshua Bell and Emanuel Ax join Alan Gilbert and the Orchestra for two of the three concerts in the city of music.

Grandeur and a Groundbreaker in Dresden

This week the Orchestra traveled to Dresden for two concerts, each with a very different flavor. The first featured Mozart, Bloch, and Musorgsky at Dresden's grand Semperoper. The second, Webcast live around the world from Volkswagen's Transparent Factory, featured Magnus Lindberg's theatrical, out-of-the-box Kraft,as well as Christopher Rouse's Prospero's Rooms and Bernstein's Serenade with violinist Joshua Bell.
