Rice University Fellows Begin Immersion with New York Philharmonic

Five students from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music are in New York City for the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, described by Music Director Alan Gilbert as “an unparalleled window into the real life of the orchestral musician.”

During their New York residency, which runs through May 29, the Zarin Mehta Fellows train and play alongside Philharmonic musicians under the direction of David Robertson at David Geffen Hall, and rehearse and perform chamber music with Philharmonic musicians. The fellows also participate in mock auditions, take lessons with Philharmonic musicians, attend a seminar by Jennifer Johnson titled “What Every Orchestral Musician Needs to Know About the Body,” tour the Philharmonic Archives, attend concerts, and meet with management. The photo above shows the Fellows in an Orchestra Committee Panel Discussion on May 23.

Violinists Jae-Won Bang, MuChen Jessica Hsieh, and Laura Liu; violist Sergein Yap; and double bassist Caleb Quillen make up the latest group of Zarin Mehta Fellows, selected by audition in the fall of 2015 when Philharmonic musicians traveled to Rice to teach, also as part of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy partnership between the Philharmonic and the Shepherd School of Music.
