Shepherd School of Music Students Named for Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program

Posted November 09, 2015

Last week, students at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music auditioned for the rare opportunity to spend a week sitting among Philharmonic musicians, learning on the job.

Today the seven lucky students selected for the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program were announced: violinists Jae-Won Bang (29), MuChen Jessica Hsieh (22), and Laura Liu (23); violist Sergein Yap (27); cellist Abraham Feder (30); and double bassists Andrew Pedersen (22) and Caleb Quillen (24).

The students will travel to New York in May 2016 for a week of immersive activities in all aspects of an orchestral player’s life — including training and playing alongside Philharmonic musicians — an experience described by Alan Gilbert as “a window into the real life of the orchestral musician.” It’s all part of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy partnership between Rice’s Shepherd School of Music and the New York Philharmonic.
