Our good friend Joshua Bell has given a tour of his "Classical Music New York" to the New York Post, and we were a couple of the points on his map!
First up: the Great Lawn of Central Park, about which he recalled:
The New York Philharmonic has a series there in the summer — it was probably the largest audience I ever played for…. In August, 2001 I was going to play the 'West Side Story Suite' — quintessential New York — and it was thunderstorming like something out of 'The Wizard of Oz.' Literally five minutes before the concert, the sky cleared…Kristin Chenoweth was singing at that concert and we did a duet together. She and I ended up dating after that for a year.
Then, there's our home, Lincoln Center, where he joined in our Opening Gala Concert this past September:
At the after-dinner party, there was Alec Baldwin, and Kathleen Turner. Woody Allen was sitting behind me. I always thought he must be neurotically reclusive or something, but he was easy to talk to. I told him my parents saw him doing stand-up in New York [decades ago]. He seemed pleased.
Josh returns to Lincoln Center to perform with us starting Wed. (the run is Nov. 12–15 & 18) — he'll be the soloist in Glazunov's Violin Concerto. Join him, and us!
