Oscar S. Schafer was just elected the next Chairman of the Board of Directors of the New York Philharmonic. He will assume the Chairmanship in early 2015 as part of a transition, succeeding Gary W. Parr, who is stepping down after holding the post since September 2009 and will continue to serve on the Board.
“I am pleased to be turning over my responsibilities to an incredibly capable person, Oscar Schafer,” said Mr. Parr. “I believe it is important to revitalize the leadership of organizations, to keep a steady flow of new ideas. Oscar is both a sophisticated business person and a Philharmonic lover, dedicated to this Orchestra, as evidenced by the support he and his wife, Didi, have given in presenting the New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks since 2007.”
In fact, our Concerts in the Parks fans may recognize Mr. Schafer's name as well as his face, as he has sometimes addressed the thousands who gather, and even conducted the Orchestra in Central Park in July 2013 as a tribute to his wife, Didi Fenton-Schafer.
