A Letter from New York Philharmonic President and CEO Deborah Borda

New York — the world — is essentially at war against an unseen enemy: COVID-19, more commonly known as the novel coronavirus. The situation is shifting daily, even hourly, and it is difficult to anticipate the next day, the next week, the next month. One thing we do know: action is necessary that wouldn’t have been conceivable a month ago. Today our children are home instead of at school; non-essential businesses have closed; most of us are working from home, if we are working at all.

The New York Philharmonic has made the difficult decision to cancel performances through June 13. There simply was no choice: we must pursue the social distancing recommended by medical professionals and local and state governments to fight the spread of the virus that has transformed our country.

This decision was particularly painful: music is a powerful source of comfort and healing, and we know that this closing is a profound loss to our audience as it is to our musicians and, indeed, the institution. Given the evolving situation, we face many challenges.

We know these are difficult times for your family and the world, but they also pose severe financial challenges to the Philharmonic. If you are in a position to help all of us get through them, there are several ways you can help.

  • Donate the value of your unused ticket(s) to the Philharmonic, rather than ask for a refund. The value of your ticket would be an incredible help to us at this time. Thank you for your consideration. To donate your ticket(s), click here.

  • Our great orchestra is still available to you through NY Phil Plays On, a collection of free digital content totaling more than 150 hours to date. You can watch video of historic performances, hear the insights and expertise of our musicians, stream our award-winning radio programs, or enjoy videos of some of our Young People’s Concerts (complemented by lessons and games). Thank you to our musicians for agreeing to allow the Philharmonic to distribute all its considerable media archives and assets through this new free portal.

  • Give to the NY Phil Plays On Emergency Fund, so this American cultural icon can survive and continue to serve our community. While we always depend upon the generosity of our audience, we need your help even more right now. Please consider a contribution toward this critical fund.

In our 178 years the New York Philharmonic has weathered the US Civil War and two World Wars. We survived the 1918 pandemic known as the Spanish flu. This Orchestra will be here when the worst has passed, when people can finally come together for the unique shared experience of a live concert.

We look forward to the time when the New York Philharmonic can again perform for you, live! In the meantime, know that the Orchestra’s musicians, Jaap van Zweden, and all of us at the Philharmonic are thinking of you. Dream with us and imagine the magic of the moment when that first downbeat is given.

Be well. Be careful. Be strong. Be hopeful.

Deborah Borda
