Matthias Goerne

Matthias Goerne, the 2018–19 Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence at the New York Philharmonic, is one of the world’s most versatile and internationally sought-after vocalists. He is a frequent guest at renowned festivals and concert halls, and has collaborated with the world’s leading orchestras, conductors, and pianists. Born in Weimar, he studied with Hans-Joachim Beyer in Leipzig, and later with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Mr. Goerne has appeared on the world’s principal opera stages including, Opéra national de Paris, Madrid’s Teatro Real, The Metropolitan Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, and Royal Opera, Covent Garden. His carefully chosen roles range from Wagner’s Wolfram (in Tannhäuser), Amfortas (Parsifal), Kurwenal (Tristan and Isolde), and Wotan (The Ring), to Richard Strauss’s Orest (Elektra) and Jochanaan (Salome) and the title roles in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle and Berg’s Wozzeck (the latter recently sung in August 2017 at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Vladimir Jurowski). Mr. Goerne’s artistry has been documented on numerous recordings, many of which have received prestigious honors, including four Grammy Award nominations, an ICMA Award, a Gramophone Award, the BBC Music Magazine Vocal Award 2017, the Diapason d’or arte, and three ECHO Klassik Awards. Following his legendary recordings with Vladimir Ashkenazy and Alfred Brendel for Universal Music, he has recently completed recording a series of selected Schubert songs with eminent pianists on 12 CDs, as The Goerne / Schubert Edition, for harmonia mundi. Other recent recordings include Brahms songs with Christoph Eschenbach, Schumann songs with Markus Hinerhäuser, and Mahler songs with the BBC Symphony. In the 2017–18 season Mr. Goerne is artist-in-residence at the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie and in the city of Madrid, where gives a series of seven concerts and recitals. Song recitals with Leif Ove Andsnes, Daniil Trifonov, Christoph Eschenbach, and Seong-Jin Cho bring him to Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall, Vienna Konzerthaus, Vienna Staatsoper, Suntory Hall, Tokyo, and the new Boulez Hall in Berlin.
