Mälkki Conducts Pictures at an Exhibition

Susanna Mälkki conducts Musorgsky’s musical representations of a close friend’s artwork, as well as Bartók’s exploration of Romanian folk music. Hailed by The Washington Post as an “extraordinary visionary,” Pierre-Laurent Aimard solos in Ligeti’s Piano Concerto, inspired by a variety of cultures. Plus, cimbalom player Jenő Lisztes performs a solo arrangement of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.

  • Susanna Mälkki

    Conductor

    Susanna Mälkki is sought-after with symphony by orchestras and in opera houses at the highest level worldwide. In her final season as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, she concludes a seven-year tenure with a distinctive dynamism and imaginative flair to her programming. She appears regularly with top orchestras throughout Europe and North America, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic (where she was principal guest conductor, 2017–22), The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Berlin Philharmonic.

    Equally in demand with major opera houses, past notable appearances include at the Opéra national de Paris, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Vienna Staatsoper, and The Metropolitan Opera. This season she visits the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with Kaija Saariaho’s Innocence, which Mälkki premiered in 2021 at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu for Puccini’s Il trittico. Future operatic titles include Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Beethoven’s Fidelio.

    Recognized for her significant contribution to the art form, Mälkki was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal of the Order of the Lion of Finland — one of Finland’s highest honors — in 2011. She has been awarded as Officier (2014) and Commandeur (2022) de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France, and in January 2016 was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in France. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London and a member of the Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien in Stockholm. In October 2016 she was named Musical America’s 2017 Conductor of the Year, and in November 2017 she was awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize.

    Widely acclaimed as a key figure in the music of our time, Pierre-Laurent Aimard has enjoyed close collaborations with many leading composers, including Ligeti, Stockhausen, Benjamin, Boulez, and Messiaen. In 2022 the pianist was awarded the Leonie Sonning Music Prize, Denmark’s most prominent music award. He works closely with leading orchestras and conductors worldwide, recently collaborating with the Antwerp Symphony and Philippe Herreweghe, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and Stéphane Denève, Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Elim Chan, Orchestre National de Lille and Alexandre Bloc, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Seoul Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
