Lisa Batiashvili Plays Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, a captivatingly melodic work, is brought to life by Lisa Batiashvili. Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska leads the Orchestra in her countryman Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, an expansive depiction of the Scandinavian landscape. Wang Lu’s World Premiere opens the concert.

    Dalia Stasevska’s charismatic and dynamic musicianship have established her as a conductor of exceptional versatility. Chief conductor of Lahti Symphony Orchestra beginning in the 2021–22 season and artistic director to the International Sibelius Festival, she also holds the post of principal guest conductor to the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She made her BBC Proms debut in 2019 and conducted the Last Night of the Proms in 2020. In 2021 she conducts the First Night of the BBC Proms, and together with BBC Symphony opens the 2021 Edinburgh International Festival.

    Highlights of her 2021–22 season include debuts with the New York Philharmonic and the Baltimore, Seattle, and Sydney symphony orchestras, as well as the opening of Tongyeong Festival with soloist Truls Mørk. She returns to the Oslo Philharmonic and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Finnish National Opera, where she conducts a double bill of Poulenc’s La Voix humane and Weill songs with Karita Mattila as soloist. Recent engagements have included Orchestre national de France, Swedish Radio Symphony, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Seoul Philharmonic, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

    A passionate opera conductor, Ms. Stasevska returned to Norske Opera to conduct Puccini’s Madama Butterfly and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. She has conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Kungliga Opera Stockholm, directed by Ole Anders Tandberg, and Tchikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Opéra de Toulon. Other productions include Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen with Finnish National Opera and Sebastian Fagerlund’s Höstsonaten, featuring Anne-Sofie von Otter, at the 2018 Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm.

    Dalia Stasevska originally studied as a violinist and composer at the Tampere Conservatoire, and violin, viola, and conducting at the Sibelius Academy. Her conducting teachers include Jorma Panula and Leif Segerstam. In December 2018 she had the honor of conducting the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic at the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm. She was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Conductor Award in 2020.
