• Santtu-Matias Rouvali

  Conductor

  In the 2023–24 season Santtu-Matias Rouvali starts his third year as principal conductor of London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and continues as chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony. In August 2023, he returns to BBC Proms with the Philharmonia Orchestra, performing the Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Seong-Jin Cho alongside Richard Strauss’s Aus Italien. Touring highlights of the season include a residency in Salzburg with the Gothenburg Symphony in November 2023 featuring music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Korngold, as well as extensive European touring with the Philharmonia, leading Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Shostakovich. Rouvali and the Philharmonia continue regularly performing in London and the rest of the United Kingdom.

  Throughout this season and last, he continues his relationships with top level orchestras across Europe, including Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Berlin Philharmonic, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, as well as returning to the New York Philharmonic. He is also artist-in-residence for Vienna’s Musikverein, which features concerts with the Vienna Symphony and both of his own orchestras. He works with soloists including Bruce Liu, Lisa Batiashvili, Seong-Jin Cho, Nicola Benedetti, Nemanja Radulović, Leif Ove Andsnes, Arabella Steinbacher, Gil Shaham, Baiba Skride, and Daniil Trifonov.

  Rouvali continues to build on his discography. In January 2019 with Gothenburg, he released a celebrated first disc of an ambitious Sibelius cycle, pairing the Symphony No. 1 with the early tone poem En saga. The album won the Gramophone Editor’s Choice award, the Choc de Classica, a prize from the German Record Critics, and the prestigious French Diapason d’Or Decouverte. In February 2020 they released the second volume, which features Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 and King Christian II; it was also immediately awarded a Choc de Classica award. The third disc — Sibelius’s Symphonies Nos. 3 and 5 and Pohjola’s Daughter — was released in October 2022, and was awarded the Radio Classique Trophée the following month. Philharmonia Records’ first release — the double CD Santtu conducts Strauss — is due to be released in March 2023, following the recent releases of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5.

  A graduate of The Juilliard School and Bavarian Staatsoper’s Opernstudio, South-African soprano Golda Schultz is internationally hailed as one of today’s most talented and versatile artists, as at home in leading operatic roles as she is as featured soloist with the world’s foremost orchestras and conductors. In 2022 she released her debut solo album on Alpha Classics, This Be Her Verse, curated with pianist Jonathan Ware.
