Unsuk Chin was born in 1961 and has lived in Germany since 1985. She studied with Sukhi Kang in Seoul and with György Ligeti in Hamburg. Her music has attracted the attention of international conductors including Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kent Nagano, Gustavo Dudamel, Alan Gilbert, Myung-Whun Chung, Susanna Mälkki, David Robertson, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Leif Segerstam, Markus Stenz, Hannu Lintu, Peter Eötvös, Jakub Hrůša, George Benjamin, Marc Albrecht, Kazushi Ono, and François-Xavier Roth. Ms. Chin’s career has been celebrated with a series of new-music awards, which so far include the 1985 Gaudeamus Award, the 2004 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition for her Violin Concerto, the 2005 Arnold Schoenberg Prize, the 2010 Prince Pierre Foundation Music Award, the 2012 Ho-Am Prize, the 2017 Wihuri Sibelius Prize, and, now, The Marie-Josée Kravis Prize for New Music at the New York Philharmonic. She has been composer-in-residence of the Lucerne Festival, Festival d’Automne, Stockholm International Composer Festival, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Cologne Philharmonic’s Eight Bridges festival, São Paulo Symphony, Casa da Música, BBC Symphony’s Total Immersion Festival, Melbourne Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. In 2007 Ms. Chin’s first opera, Alice in Wonderland, received its World Premiere at the Bavarian Staatsoper, opening the Munich Opera Festival. Portrait CDs and DVDs of Ms. Chin’s music have appeared on the Deutsche Grammophon, Kairos, Unitel, and Analekta labels. Regularly commissioned by leading performing organizations around the world, her music has been performed by the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, among others. Unsuk Chin has also been active as a concert curator, overseeing the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra’s Ars Nova series (which she founded) from 2006 to 2017 and serving as artistic director of the Music of Today series at London’s Philharmonia Orchestra since 2011. Her works are published exclusively by Boosey & Hawkes.

Susanna Mälkki’s 2019–20 season includes returns to the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre national de Lyon, and the Boston, Chicago, and London symphony orchestras. Ms. Mälkki makes debuts with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre de Paris, and Orchestre philharmonique de Monte-Carlo. Recent engagements include the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (as a Wiener Konzerthaus “Portrait” artist), Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France.

The 2019–20 season marks Ms. Mälkki’s fourth season as chief conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Upcoming highlights include premieres by leading national composers Kaija Saariaho and Lotta Wennäkoski, a new work by Felipe Lara (co-commissioned with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), a tour to Belgium, and the continuation of the orchestra’s Bartók Trilogy recordings (BIS Records). In her third season as principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ms. Mälkki conducts Holst’s The Planets, Sibelius’s Lemminkäinen Suite, and a new composition by Saariaho; together with Leila Josefowicz she pays tribute to the late Oliver Knussen with a specially curated New Music Group concert centred around his chamber music and a performance of his Violin Concerto.

A renowned opera conductor, Susanna Mälkki makes debuts at the Festival d’Aix en Provence in 2020 with the world premiere of Saariaho’s Innocence, and returns to the Opéra national de Paris to conduct Philippe Boesmans’s Yvonne, princesse de Bourgogne. Past engagements include Dvořák’s Rusalka in 2019 and the world premiere of Francesconi’s Trompe-la-Mort in 2017. In 2018 and 2016, Ms. Mälkki made critically acclaimed debuts at the Vienna Staatsoper (leading Gottfried von Einem’s Dantons Tod, and The Metropolitan Opera (Saariaho’s L’Amour de loin). She previously collaborated with Francesconi on Quartett and was the first woman to conduct a production at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, in 2011, returning in 2014. Other opera highlights include Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with Finnish National Opera, and her Hamburg Staatsoper debut conducting Janáček’s Jenůfa.

Sheng virtuoso Wu Wei has performed with such leading orchestras and ensembles as the Berlin and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, and Ensemble Intercontemporain. He has played with conductors including Jaap van Zweden, Kent Nagano, Gustavo Dudamel, Marin Alsop, Myung Whun Chung, Susanna Mälkki, Ilan Volkov, Markus Stenz, and Matthias Pintscher.

Wu Wei has appeared at prestigious festivals, including the BBC Proms, Paris Autumn Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Berliner Festspiele, Warsaw Autumn, and Musica Nova Helsinki. He has performed in venues worldwide, such as the Berlin Philharmonie, London’s Royal Albert Hall, Log Angeles’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Paris’s Théâtre du Châtelet.

Wu Wei has performed the World Premieres of 400 works, including 20 concertos for sheng and orchestra by composers such as Cage, Unsuk Chin, Jukka Tiensuu, Toshio Hosokawa, Enjott Schneider, Guus Janssen, Bernd Richard Deutsch, Ondřej Adámek, Liza Lim, and Huang Ruo. A prolific composer himself, he has received commissions from the Royaumont and Civitella Ranieri Foundations, among others.

He is a winner of Germany’s Musica Vitale competition, German Global Root Award, German Record Critics’ Award, and Edinburgh International Festival Herald Angels Prize, and he was named best soloist at the Chinese Music Awards 2017. He has recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Harmonia Mundi, and Wergo labels. His recording Unsuk Chin: 3 Concertos (Deutsche Grammophon) garnered the International Classical Music Award and BBC Music Magazine Award in 2015. His performance was one of the highlights of the BBC Proms in 2014.

Wu Wei studied at the Shanghai Music Conservatory and Hanns Eisler Academy Berlin with a DAAD scholarship. He has developed the ancient instrument into an innovative force in contemporary music.

Throughout her career, Deborah Borda has extended the artistic, commercial, and technological boundaries of American symphony orchestras. She became President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Philharmonic in September 2017. Prior posts include President and CEO, David C. Bohnett Presidential Chair, of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Executive Director of the New York Philharmonic; General Manager of the San Francisco Symphony; President and Managing Director of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra; and Executive Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In 2015 she became the first arts executive to join Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership as a Hauser Leader-in-Residence. In 2018 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and named Chair of the Avery Fisher Artist Program.

Deborah Borda became the first woman in recent history to manage a major American symphony orchestra when she was appointed Executive Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1991, and subsequently guided the Orchestra through a period of artistic and fiscal growth. Within her first three months after returning to the New York Philharmonic in 2017, Ms. Borda completed a $50 million launch fund to usher in a new era of fiscal stability and assembled a new leadership team to support her and Music Director Jaap van Zweden’s vision for the Orchestra. The 2018–19 season, van Zweden’s first as Music Director, introduced this vision: engagement with timely social issues, connections with New York City, and a redoubling of the Philharmonic’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, new music, and educational initiatives, such as the Philharmonic’s Very Young Composers program.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s success during Deborah Borda’s 17-year tenure was chosen for case studies by Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School. During her first decade in Los Angeles, Ms. Borda designed an acclaimed business, education, and curatorial plan credited with restoring the orchestra to robust artistic and financial health. She reinvigorated plans to build and launch Walt Disney Concert Hall, oversaw the addition of a new shell for the Hollywood Bowl, and reimagined and diversified programming at both venues. She also spearheaded the appointment of music director Gustavo Dudamel. Committed to the orchestra’s social imperative, Ms. Borda and Mr. Dudamel invested in groundbreaking educational initiatives, including the founding of YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), a flagship program that provides free after-school instruction to children in underserved communities, and the national Take a Stand initiative, which promotes the El Sistema philosophy of social change through music.

A former professional violist, Deborah Borda graduated from Bennington College and continued her studies at London’s Royal College of Music. She received an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. She is in demand internationally as a consultant and lecturer, and her accomplishments in the field of orchestral music have been cited in numerous reviews and articles, both nationally and internationally.
