Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev has been music director of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (ONCT) for more than ten years, is music director and conductor of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, and was music director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) through the 2015–16 season.
His 2018–19 season highlights include his New York Philharmonic debut and appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic for a project with the Bolshoi Choir as well as on tour in Germany. He also tours Germany with the Vienna Philharmonic and returns to the DSO, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and NHK Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Sokhiev has led the Vienna Philharmonic (at the Lucerne Festival and for Mozart Week), The Philadelphia Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and Orchestre National de France; Boston, Chicago, London, Swedish Radio, Finnish Radio, NHK, and Bournemouth symphony orchestras; Berlin, Rotterdam, Oslo, Munich, and Russia’s National philharmonic orchestras; Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Turin’s RAI Orchestra, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala Orchestra, and Bavarian Staatsoper Orchestra; and the NHK Music Festival. He has toured Europe with the Philharmonia Orchestra, with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and with the DSO, and has toured with the ONCT across Europe, Asia, the United Kingdom, and South America. He has conducted London’s Philharmonia Orchestra every season since 2003, and has toured with that orchestra in Europe.
On the operatic stage, he has conducted new productions for the Bolshoi Theatre, including Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust. He has led productions at the Mariinsky Theatre, Welsh National Opera, The Metropolitan Opera (with the Mariinsky), Houston Grand Opera, Aix-en-Provence Festival, and in Madrid. He was named Musical Discovery of the Year by the Syndicat de la Critique in France in 2005.
Tugan Sokhiev’s discography includes recordings for Naïve Classique with the OCNT, including Tchaikovsky’s Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, Musorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and The Firebird. He has also recorded Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible, Fifth Symphony, and Scythian Suite with the DSO (Sony Classical).
