American conductor Case Scaglione began his tenure as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic in September 2011, the same year he received the Conductor’s Prize by the Solti Foundation U.S. He made his Philharmonic subscription debut in November 2012, stepping in to lead the opening work on a concert otherwise conducted by Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur, and in May–June 2013 he led the Orchestra in two works on a program also conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert. He has also conducted seven New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concerts. In September 2014 he was elevated to Associate Conductor, a position revived for him by Alan Gilbert. This season Mr. Scaglione makes debuts with the Lucerne and Dallas Symphony Orchestras and the Rochester Philharmonic, and returns to the Hong Kong Philharmonic. He made his professional conducting debut with The Cleveland Orchestra in 2010 after being awarded the Aspen Conducting Prize the same year. Since then, he has appeared as a guest conductor with Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the St. Louis, Baltimore, Houston, Colorado, and Jacksonville symphony orchestras, among others. In September 2013 he assisted Andrew Davis on a production of Richard Strauss’s Elektra at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Mr. Scaglione is a regular visitor to China, where he has given concerts with the Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestras and China Philharmonic. Last season he conducted Bach’s Mass in B minor with Madrid’s Orquesta Clásica Santa Cecilia. Mr. Scaglione was music director of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra of Los Angeles from 2008 to 2011, when he was the driving force behind the continued artistic growth and diversification of the organization and founded 360° Music, which took that orchestra to inner-city schools. His programs ranged from Wagner to Ligeti and included the orchestra’s first staged opera in almost 60 years as well as the Los Angeles Premiere of John Adams’s Doctor Atomic Symphony, supported by the National Endowment of the Arts. Case Scaglione was a student of David Zinman at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, where he won the James Conlon Prize, and was assistant conductor of the Aspen Music Festival and School. In 2011 Mr. Scaglione was one of three conducting Fellows at Tanglewood, chosen by James Levine and Stefan Asbury. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, and his post-graduate studies were spent at the Peabody Institute, studying with Gustav Meier.

Violinist Quan Ge joined the New York Philharmonic in June 2009. She holds a bachelor's degree from The Curtis Institute of Music, where she worked with Yumi Scott, Ida Kavafian, and Jaime Laredo, and a master's degree from The Juilliard School, where she studied with David Chan. A native of Huai Nan, China, Ms. Ge was the recipient of a Fu Chen Xian Scholarship, and has won top prizes in both the China National Competition and the Jeunesses Music Competition (Romania). While a student at Curtis, she played as a substitute with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Ms. Ge is an active chamber musician and recitalist, and most recently worked with pianist Robert McDonald and the Borromeo String Quartet at the Taos School of Music in 2008.

Piano

Pianist Eric Huebner joined the roster of the New York Philharmonic in January 2012. A native of Los Angeles, he is a graduate of The Juilliard School, where he studied with Jerome Lowenthal, and has been a guest pianist with the Philharmonic since 2004. Mr. Huebner has been featured in orchestral works by Stravinsky, Ives, R. Strauss, and Milhaud, among others.

In June 2012 he will perform as soloist with Musicians from the Philharmonic in the World Premiere of Elliott Carter’s Two Controversies and a Conversation — a double concerto for piano and percussion with percussionist Colin Currie — on the CONTACT! program, conducted by David Robertson.

An active soloist and chamber musician, Mr. Huebner has twice been a featured recitalist at the Ojai Festival in California. He has also appeared on the Monday Evening Concerts and Piano Spheres series in Los Angeles in addition to solo appearances at the Carlsbad Music Festival, Miller Theater and (le) Poisson Rouge. He has performed at Zankel Hall as soloist in Ligeti’s Piano Concerto and at Alice Tully Hall in Messiaen’s Oiseaux Exotiques, both conducted by David Robertson. Since 2001 Mr. Huebner has been a member of Antares, a quartet comprising clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. A first-prize winner of the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Antares has performed in major chamber music venues throughout the United States.

Eric Huebner is currently assistant professor of piano at the University at Buffalo, where he maintains an active piano studio and performs as part of the Slee Sinfonietta. He has recorded a wide variety of solo piano and chamber music for the Col Legno, Centaur, Bridge, Albany, Tzadik, Innova, New Focus Recordings, and Mode Records labels.

Cellist Patrick Jee joined the New York Philharmonic in July 2013. A native New Yorker, he has toured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Asia, making appearances at New York’s Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., London’s Wigmore Hall, Paris’s Salle Gaveau, and the Seoul Arts Center. He also performed on CNN’s American Morning as well as at the United Nations at the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Korean War armistice.

As a soloist, he has performed with the Buffalo and Rochester Philharmonic orchestras, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, National Orchestra of Toulouse, Edmonton Symphony, and the Orchestre National d’Île de France. He has been a guest artist at major music festivals including Aspen, Banff, Caramoor, Casals, Kneisel Hall, La Jolla, and Olympic.

In 2006 Mr. Jee was the Grand Prize winner of the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition, which earned him concerts throughout Mexico and a recording contract with Naxos’s subsidiary, Urtext Digital Classics. He has also won top awards at the Andre Navarra International Cello Competition, the Holland-America Music Society Cello Competition, and the Irving Klein String Competition.

An avid chamber musician, he is a member of the New Piano Trio, winners of the 2008 Fischoff, 2007 Coleman, and 2007 Plowman chamber music competitions and recipient of the Harvard Musical Association’s Arthur W. Foote Prize. Since 2001 he has performed with Sejong Soloists, collaborating with artists such as Barry Douglas, Vladimir Feltsman, Lynn Harrell, Cho-Liang Lin, and Gil Shaham. As a founding member of Ensemble Ditto, he helped introduce more than 15,000 people to chamber music as South Korea’s most popular classical musical presentation of 2008.

Before joining the New York Philharmonic, Patrick Jee served as assistant principal cello of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, principal cello of the Grant Park Orchestra, and was on faculty at Roosevelt University-Chicago College of Performing Arts. His transcription of Glazunov’s Meditation, published by International Music Company (IMC), recently won First Prize from the Music Publishers Association’s Paul Revere Awards, and his transcription of Corelli’s La Folia Variations will be released by IMC in 2013.  

Mr. Jee holds a bachelor of music from The Juilliard School and a master of music from Yale University, where he studied with Aldo Parisot. He can be heard on the Albany, Urtext, and HM record labels.

He resides on the Upper West Side with his wife, violinist Nanae Iwata, and is an ardent New York Yankees fan.

Sumire Kudo joined the Philharmonic as a cellist in June 2006. Previously she taught at Indiana University–South Bend and was the cellist of the Avalon String Quartet. Born in Tokyo, Japan, Ms. Kudo began cello studies at age four with her father, cellist Akiyoshi Kudo. She came to the United States in 2000, after establishing herself in her native country through solo performances and recordings. Her honors include the Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award, which she received from the Sony Music Foundation after being chosen by Seiji Ozawa and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi as the most promising cellist in 2005, and prizes at the Sapporo Junior Cello Competition and 62nd Japan Music Competition. Ms. Kudo is a graduate of Tokyo’s Toho School and The Juilliard School. She has participated in the Nagano-Aspen Music, Aspen Music, Santa Fe, and Marlboro Music festivals. Record Geijutsu, Japan’s leading classical music magazine, named her second solo CD, Love of Beauty, Best Recording.

Kim Laskowski joined the New York Philharmonic in September 2003 as Associate Principal Bassoon. Born in Brooklyn, she attended the High School of Music and Art and The Juilliard School, where she studied with Harold Goltzer, former Associate Principal Bassoon of the New York Philharmonic. While at Juilliard she won the Walter and Elsie Naumburg Award for Orchestral Excellence. She completed a master’s degree at Juilliard while playing in the National Orchestral Association, and has also participated in the Tanglewood and Spoleto festivals. Recipient of a Fulbright grant for foreign study, she attended the Conservatoire National Superieure de Paris, where she was a student of Maurice Allard. While at the Conservatoire, she toured Europe as a member of the Orchestre des Prix.

As an active player on the New York musical scene, Ms. Laskowski has appeared with ensembles such as the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, American Symphony Orchestra, and Eos Orchestra. She can be heard on numerous television, radio, and film scores, and holds two platinum records for CDs recorded with the rock group 10,000 Maniacs. As a chamber player, she has performed and recorded several CDs with Music Amici in classical, jazz, and 20th-century works for mixed ensembles.

Before joining the Philharmonic, Ms. Laskowski played second bassoon in the New York City Ballet Orchestra. She was principal bassoon of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra from 1999 through 2003.

Kim Laskowski resides in Manhattan with her husband, Zaharis Kalaitzis, and her two children, Lana and Theo.

A native of Mallorca, Spain, clarinetist and E-flat clarinetist Pascual Martínez Forteza joined the New York Philharmonic in 2001; he currently serves as Acting Associate Principal Clarinet, The Honey M. Kurtz Family Chair. Prior to his appointment with the Philharmonic, he held tenure with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and at age 18 he was assistant principal and later acting principal of the Baleares Symphony Orchestra in Spain. He has recently performed as guest principal clarinet with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle.

Mr. Martínez Forteza appears regularly as a soloist, recitalist, and master-class teacher at international festivals and conservatories, including the International Clarinet Festival of Chanchung (China), ClarinetFest 2009 (Porto, Portugal), Buffet Crampon Summer Clarinet Festival (Jacksonville, Florida), University of Southern California, Mannes School of Music, The Juilliard School, New Jersey Clarinet Symposium, XI Encuentro Internacional de Clarinetes de Lisboa (Portugal), Mexico Clarinet Convention, and I Latinoamerican Clarinet Congress (Lima, Peru). Past and future engagements include solo performances of Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, Weber’s Clarinet Concertos Nos.1 and 2, Krommer’s Concerto for Two Clarinets, Rossini’s Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra, and Luigi Bassi’s Fantasy on Themes from Verdi’s Rigoletto. He frequently collaborates with Philharmonic colleagues in New York City venues such as Avery Fisher Hall, Merkin Concert Hall, and Carnegie Hall.

Since 2003 Mr. Martínez Forteza and Spanish pianist Gema Nieto have played throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States as Duo Forteza-Nieto. Together they founded the Benifaio Music Festival in Spain, where Philharmonic colleagues have joined them for a week of master classes and concerts. A decade ago Mr. Martínez Forteza founded Vent Cameristic, a wind ensemble of professional musicians from Spain. As a soloist with that ensemble, he has played every year at the Concerts d’Estiú in Valencia, Spain. In 2003 Spanish National Radio (RNE) produced a CD featuring selections from these performances. Mr. Martínez Forteza has also made recordings for radio and television in Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Pascual Martínez Forteza started playing clarinet at age ten with his father, Pascual V. Martínez, principal clarinet of the Baleares Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and teacher at the Baleares Conservatory of Music in Spain. Mr. Martínez Forteza earned his master’s degree from the Baleares and Liceo de Barcelona Music Conservatories in Spain and pursued advanced studies with Yehuda Gilad at the University of Southern California, where he won first prize in the university’s 1998 Concerto Competition.

Mr. Martínez Forteza is currently a faculty member at New York University and teaches orchestral repertoire at Manhattan School of Music. A Buffet Crampon Artist and Vandoren Artist, he plays Green Line Tosca Buffet clarinets and uses Vandoren reeds and M30D mouthpieces.

Mark Nuccio joined the New York Philharmonic in 1999 as Associate Principal and Solo E-flat Clarinet. He previously held positions with orchestras in Pittsburgh, Denver, Savannah, and Florida. He has worked with distinguished conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Mariss Jansons, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Erich Leinsdorf, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, André Previn, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Gustavo Dudamel. Additionally, Mr. Nuccio has toured with both the New York Philharmonic and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to numerous countries, recorded with both orchestras, and performed with the Philharmonic on the award-winning series, Live From Lincoln Center, broadcast on PBS. A recent New York Philharmonic tour included a historic visit to North Korea — an event watched around the world.

An active solo and chamber musician, Mark Nuccio has been the featured performer with several orchestras in the United States and on numerous occasions at the International Clarinet Association conventions. He made his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2001, his Japan recital debut in 2002, and he now regularly performs in recital in the Far East and Europe, as well as across the U.S. In New York, he often can be heard at Merkin Concert Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Carnegie Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Nuccio is also a member of the Philharmonic Quintet of New York (PQNY) — a group of five woodwind players from the New York Philharmonic. Since its inception, in 2001, the PQNY has performed across the globe. During summers, Mr. Nuccio performs chamber music at the Strings in the Mountain Music Festival in Steamboat, Colorado.

As a studio musician, Mr. Nuccio is featured on several movie soundtracks, including Failure to Launch, The Last Holiday, The Rookie, The Score, Intolerable Cruelty, Alamo, Pooh’s Heffalump, Hitch, The Manchurian Candidate, and numerous television commercials. He also performed on the Late Show with David Letterman as well as on the 2003 Grammy Awards.

In November 2006, Mr. Nuccio’s first CD, Opening Night,featuring the clarinet quintets of Mozart and Brahms, was released, and is available at dorian.com as well as on iTunes and amazon.com.

A Colorado native, Mark Nuccio holds a master’s degree from Northwestern University, where he studied with the renowned pedagogue Robert Marcellus. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He is an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West, now a partner in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy.

Beyond his active performing schedule, Mr. Nuccio is committed to training the next generation of musicians. He currently serves on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and teaches master classes in the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Nuccio is a Rico advising artist and clinician as well as an artist/clinician for Buffet Crampon, and performs exclusively on Buffet clarinets.

Flutist Yoobin Son was the first Korean to join the New York Philharmonic’s wind section when she became a member of the Orchestra in November 2012. She has served as the principal flute of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and principal flute of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Son has performed as a soloist with ensembles including the New Haven, New Jersey, Florida, William Paterson University, and Korean symphony orchestras, and the Prime and Seoul Philharmonic orchestras. She has appeared in recital throughout the United States, among them the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts in Chicago, as well as on the Young Artist Series of the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation in Seoul, South Korea.

A dedicated chamber musician, Ms. Son has participated at festivals including the Marlboro Music Festival and Music from Angel Fire. She is an alumna of Carnegie Hall’s The Academy, where she was an active performer in the acclaimed Ensemble ACJW. As part of the Academy’s fellowship program, Ms. Son was a teaching artist at P.S. 207K in Brooklyn.

She has received honors including the Grand Prize at the Florida Orchestra Young Artist Competition, First Prize at the National Flute Association Soloist Competition, Second Prize at the Koussevitzky International Winds Competition, and the Conductor’s Award at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Auditions.

Yoobin Son received her bachelor of music degree from The Curtis Institute of Music, master’s degree from Yale University, and professional studies and artist diploma from the Manhattan School of Music. Her principal teachers have included Robert Langevin, Ransom Wilson, Jeffrey Khaner, and Bradley Garner.

Leelanee Sterrett joined the New York Philharmonic in June 2013; she currently serves as Acting Associate Principal Horn. She was previously a member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and a regular substitute with the New York Philharmonic. Ms. Sterrett is also an alumna of The Academy, Carnegie Hall’s collective of young professionals and music advocates, and a former member of Ensemble ACJW.

A northern-Michigan native, Ms. Sterrett grew up in a musically enthusiastic family and attended Interlochen Arts Academy. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master’s degree from the Yale School of Music. Her primary teachers include William Purvis, Douglas Hill, and Julie Schleif. Ms. Sterrett has spent summers at the Tanglewood Music Center, the Pacific and Sarasota music festivals, the National Orchestral Institute, and the Banff Centre for the Arts. She is a past prizewinner in the International Horn Competition of America and the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Program.

In recent seasons, Ms. Sterrett has made solo appearances at Carnegie Hall, with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and at the 2015 International Horn Symposium with her Philharmonic colleagues. She currently serves on the horn faculties of Rutgers University and New York University.

Sherry Sylar is Associate Principal Oboe of the New York Philharmonic, a position she has held since joining the orchestra in 1984. She was the Orchestra’s Acting Principal Oboe during the 2005–06 season and has also served as guest principal oboe for other major orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (in December 2015, led by Riccardo Muti), Boston Symphony Orchestra (in its 2001 tour, led by Bernard Haitink), the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (for its 2003 Carnegie Hall debut, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung), the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (in its 2007 American tour), and the St. Louis Symphony. Prior to joining the New York Philharmonic she was a member of the Louisville Orchestra. She was among the select group of Philharmonic musicians who joined the orchestra that Leonard Bernstein conducted in the historic Freedom Concert at the falling of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

As a featured soloist with the New York Philharmonic, she has performed Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante in B-flat major, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane, and Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe, with the Orchestra’s Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, conducted by Kent Nagano. In 1989 she was soloist in the Orchestra’s performances and recording of Handel’s Oboe Concerto in G minor, Zubin Mehta conducting. She also serves as the New York Philharmonic’s oboe d’amore player, and she earned praise from The New York Times for her solos on that instrument during the orchestra’s 2013 The Bach Variations: A Philharmonic Festival. In March 2016 she performed the World Premiere of Pablo Furman’s Concerto for Oboe and Strings with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra.

An avid performer of chamber music, she appears often in the concerts of the New York Philharmonic Ensembles and has participated in the Aspen and Grand Teton Music Festivals. She played Luciano Berio’s Sequenza VIIa for solo oboe at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater as part of the New York Philharmonic’s celebration of the late composer in 2008. She is also a member of the Philharmonic Quintet of New York, which was formed in 2001 to give concerts for workers in the World Trade Center area following the disaster of 9/11. The quintet has gone on to give master classes and recitals worldwide and is preparing its first CD.

Ms. Sylar gives master classes for oboists internationally and was invited to China as a judge for the Beijing National Orchestra’s first-ever auditions. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, she earned her bachelor’s degree at Indiana University and her master’s degree from Northwestern University. She formerly taught at the University of Evansville in Indiana and since 2005 has served on the oboe faculty of Mannes College The New School for Music in New York City. Her new CD, Oboe Dolce, includes solo oboe and chamber music featuring Principal Bassoon Judith LeClair, Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps, Harriet Wingreen, Jonathan Feldman, Yi Fang Wang, and Norman Weiss.

Chinese violinist Shanshan Yao joined the New York Philharmonic in September 2013. Previously, she was a member of the first violin section of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for four years. She recently performed Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by music director Manfred Honeck, as well as with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. As a soloist Ms. Yao has also performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Civic Symphony, Banff Centre Chamber Orchestra, and Japan’s Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra. In February 2009 she received critical acclaim for her debut recital at Canada National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She was invited to appear in a special performance for former Secretary of State Colin Powell at the Eisenhower Fellowships conference in Philadelphia in 2006. Ms. Yao served on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University’s Pre-College Music Program in the summer of 2013.

Ms. Yao’s numerous honors include first prizes in the Calgary Concerto Competition and Morningside Music Bridge Concerto Competition (Canada), second prizes in the Shean String Competition (Canada) and Hellam Young Artists Competition (U.S.), as well as prizes in the Corpus Christi International Competition for Piano and Strings (U.S.) and the Michael Hill International Violin Competition (New Zealand). As one of the winners of the CBC Radio’s Up and Coming series, a showcase of promising young talents, she shared the stage with pianist Jon Kimura Parker.

An active chamber musician, Ms. Yao has participated in the Aspen, Summit, and Sarasota music festivals; Music from Angel Fire; The Banff Centre; and Music@Menlo, where she served as a chamber music coach in 2009. Her piano trio won second prize in the National Music Festival in Canada in 2002. Ms. Yao has collaborated with such renowned artists as Ida Kavafian, Steve Tenenbom, Jeremy Denk, and Ransom Wilson.

A violinist since the age of six, Ms. Yao enrolled at Shanghai Conservatory of Music when she was nine. She made her orchestral debut at the age of 12 with the Shanghai Radio Symphony Orchestra, and continued her studies in Canada as a full-scholarship student in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Academy Program. Shanshan Yao received her bachelor of music degree from The Curtis Institute of Music and her master of music degree from The Juilliard School. Her teachers included Aaron Rosand, Donald Weilerstein, Ronald Copes, William van der Sloot, and Xiaoming Wu.
