Philippe Jordan

Philippe Jordan has served as music director of the Opéra de Paris since 2009 and principal conductor of the Vienna Symphony since the 2014–15 season. He has been appointed music director of the Vienna Staatsoper beginning in 2020.

Mr. Jordan’s career on the podium began at Germany’s Stadttheater Ulm and at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. From 2001 to 2004 he was principal conductor of Austria’s Graz Opera House and the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. During that period, Mr. Jordan also made debuts at many of the most important international opera houses and festivals, including The Metropolitan Opera and Houston Grand Opera; the Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, and Glyndebourne festivals; and the Vienna Staatsoper, Bavarian Staatsoper, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. From 2006 to 2010, Mr. Jordan served as principal guest conductor of Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and in summer 2012 he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival leading a production of Wagner’s Parsifal. He returned to New York in spring 2019 to conduct Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelungen at The Metropolitan Opera.

As a symphonic conductor, Mr. Jordan has worked with such renowned European orchestras as the Berlin, Munich, and Vienna philharmonic orchestras and the Vienna Symphony, Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, Orchestra philharmonique de Radio France, London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Zurich’s Tonhalle-Orchester, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, NDR Symphony Orchestra, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In North America, he has conducted the Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Montreal, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, and National symphony orchestras; The Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Minnesota orchestras; and the New York Philharmonic.
