Biography

Maline Casta is a stage designer and visual artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. After earning a master’s degree in stage design from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, she has created projects in more than 15 countries. With a focus on dance and performance, her costume design credits include Compañía Nacional de Danza (Spain), as well as experimental stages such as MDT in Stockholm. She also holds a master’s degree in visual storytelling from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm, where she is a faculty member. In 2018 Ms. Casta became the artistic producer of the art project All Set for Action, leading to collaborations with artists and architects such as Saadia Hussain, Rebecca Rubin, Angelia Åkerman (White arkitekter), and designers Sepidar Hosseini and Moa Schulman. Her work is often interdisciplinary and takes a playful approach to challenging social issues. She has been commissioned to create several large-scale, interactive performance installations in which the audience has played a central part, such as the outdoor tea party My Old China (2013). Hey! (2016) filled a gallery in Moscow with straw and invited the audience to play. Her award-winning work I’ve never been fond of reality used play theory to investigate the limits of current economic systems. Her work in opera dates back to the 2004 Juilliard production of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges, and includes a ten-year collaboration with the Royal Swedish Opera on historic stage costumes.
