Biography
Louis Langrée

Louis Langrée has been music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) since 2013 and of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival since 2003. His collaborative approach to musicmaking and bold artistic vision have captivated the imagination and curiosity of critics and audiences alike.

Langrée has catalyzed the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra’s artistic rise and expanded its repertoire beyond the Classical period, from Lully to Magnus Lindberg. Since his debut in 1998 he has conducted more than 165 Mostly Mozart events across the Lincoln Center campus; more than 50 Metropolitan Opera performances; and has taught Juilliard School masterclasses. In the fall of 2020 he and the CSO will return to Lincoln Center’s Great Performers with the New York premiere of Christopher Rouse’s Symphony No. 6.

Two of Langrée’s CSO recordings were Grammy nominated: Transatlantic, featuring works by Varèse, Gershwin, and Stravinsky, and Concertos for Orchestra, with world premieres by Sebastian Currier, Thierry Escaich, and Zhou Tian. His Pelléas et Mélisande trilogy contrasted the settings of Maeterlinck’s play by Fauré, Debussy, and Schoenberg; his Beethoven revolution cycle pairs the nine symphonies with world premieres and 20th-century masterworks. CSO initiatives launched during his tenure include One City/One Symphony and the MusicNOW collaboration with Bryce Dessner.

Langrée’s interests range from early music to the music of today. He has conducted premieres by Julia Adolphe, Daníel Bjarnason, Anna Clyne, Jennifer Higdon, David Lang, Nico Muhly, André Previn, and Caroline Shaw, among numerous others. He leads period-instrument ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Freiburg Baroque, and Orchestre des Champs-Elysées.

He has guest conducted the Berliner Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Philadelphia, Budapest Festival, Czech Philharmonic, and NHK Symphony orchestras, as well as the Orchestre national de France, Orchestre de Paris, and Leipzig Gewandhaus. Upcoming engagements include debuts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia, Montreal Symphony, and National Symphony in Washington, DC. In addition to The Met, Langrée conducts at the world’s leading opera houses, including the Vienna Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Bavarian Staatsoper, and the Glyndebourne, Aix-en-Provence, BBC Proms, Edinburgh International, and Hong Kong Arts festivals.

Louis Langrée is a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.
