Known for her bold, nuanced, and innovative stage direction, Elkhanah Pulitzer is an esteemed director of opera and theater. Recent projects include the live tour of Esperanza Spalding’s new album 12 Little Spells and DIORAMA, an art installation at the Institute of Advanced Uncertainty. She has directed projects with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Theater of Saint Louis, West Edge Opera, and Canadian Opera Company, among others. Her theater directing credits include work with Impact Theater, Cutting Ball, Riverside Theater, and Ensemble Theater Company.
Ms. Pulitzer explores the intersection between music and theater through innovation and hybridized forms. Her past collaborations include next-generation projects with Washington National Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Omaha, and SF Opera Lab, an experimental chamber opera two-year program at San Francisco Opera, where she served as artistic curator and developed the mission, brand, and programming. She was honored with the Opera America Success Award for her libretto Dream of the Pacific, an original opera about Lewis and Clark with music by Stephen Mager.
Born in Boston and raised in St. Louis and Marin County, Elkhanah Pulitzer serves as board vice president of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, which advances experimentation in art curation, installation, and live programming.
