Biography

Edward Gardner, OBE, became chief conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2015, and led its 250th anniversary gala concert soon after. Music director of English National Opera for eight years (until July 2015), under his direction the company presented numerous stellar productions; he returned in spring 2016 to conduct a critically acclaimed new production of Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

During recent seasons Mr. Gardner has worked with some of the world’s major orchestras, including Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Orchestre national de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and the Boston, Toronto, Montreal, and Houston symphony orchestras.

From the 2016–17 season onward he will expand his guest conducting in North America to include debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, National Symphony (Washington, D.C.), Seattle Symphony, and Minnesota orchestras. In Europe he will continue to work with major orchestras such as Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI di Torino, and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Mr. Gardner works regularly with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Proms, and in 2011 he conducted the Last Night of the Proms, televised live to audiences worldwide. He enjoys a flourishing relationship with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), of which he was principal guest conductor for four years. He also continues relationships with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Edinburgh International Festival.

In great demand on the international opera scene, Edward Gardner continues an ongoing relationship with The Metropolitan Opera and also works with Lyric Opera Chicago, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Opéra national de Paris, and The Royal Opera, Covent Garden. He also works regularly with young musicians, conducting the CBSO and Barbican Youth Orchestras, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and at The Juilliard School. In 2002 he founded the Hallé Youth Orchestra and in September 2014 was appointed Mackerras Chair of Conducting, a new role at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

An exclusive Chandos recording artist, Mr. Gardner has most recently released critically acclaimed discs of works by Lutosławski, Szymanowski, Bartók, Britten, Verdi, Walton, Janáček, Poulenc, Schoenberg, and Berio, and is engaged in an ongoing project to record Mendelssohn’s orchestral works.
