Biography

Gamelan Dharma Swara is a coalition of musicians, dancers, and composers presenting Balinese performing arts through performance, commissions, and education. Dedicated to tradition along with development and exploration through new works, its mission is to cultivate Balinese gamelan as a global artform, engaging diverse partners and curious audiences.

Dharma Swara is carving out a compelling niche in the New York City arts scene. Their repertoire balances work by and in collaboration with Bali’s leading artists, such as I Dewa Ketut Alit and I Gusti Nyoman Darta, as well as American composers, including Matthew Welch (Blarvuster, Experiments in Opera), Joel Mellin, Momenta Quartet, Vivian Fung, and jazz singer Nerissa Campbell.

Established in 1989, Gamelan Dharma Swara has performed at venues including (le) Poisson Rouge, Symphony Space, Asia Society, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Museum of Modern Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The group toured Bali in 2010 as the first Western ensemble to be invited to perform in the Bali Arts Festival’s popular gong kebyar battle-of-the-bands style competition. They have since appeared at festivals such as New Music Gathering, Spring Revolution Festival at National Sawdust, and Basilica Soundscape, for which they joined a line-up including experimental post-punk outfit Swans and post-metal band Deafheaven.

Dharma Swara plays with spirit, dedication, and gratitude on gamelan semara dana instruments made by Balinese pande (blacksmith) Made Sukerta in 2017. Invented by Balinese musician, composer, and master gamelan-smith I Wayan Beratha in 1987, the semara dana set combines the popular 20th-century gong kebyar tuning (selisir, a five-tone scale) with the older, seven-tone semar pegulingan (from the 16th or 17th century), making it possible to play across a wide range of traditional and contemporary repertoire.
