The Volunteer Council was established in 1980 to coordinate the activities of the individuals who give their time, talent and energy to the New York Philharmonic throughout the year. Governed by its own Executive Committee, the Council numbers nearly 200 volunteers. Many volunteers work behind the scenes supporting staff; others perform various functions at concerts and special events. All are recognized each spring at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Day.
The Volunteer Council represents people of many ages with diverse skills. Before you apply, reflect on how your own capabilities might fit in to the world of the Philharmonic. Some people like interacting with the public. Others have professional or computer skills. Still others might enjoy working with young people through our educational programs. Regardless of personal interests, all Council members must fulfill three basic requirements:
Once the Volunteer Council receives and reviews your application, you will be invited to come in for a personal interview with members of the Council’s Executive and Steering Committees. Finally, if your application is approved, you’ll be assigned a mentor who will help you navigate your new roles and responsibilities. We are proud that many volunteers remain Council members for decades; we hope to count you among them!

Many of our volunteers enjoy working directly with the thousands of children and young adults who take advantage of the Philharmonic’s renowned education programs. If you are an upbeat individual with lots of extra energy, consider volunteering in this area!
The New York Philharmonic depends on the ongoing generosity of its many donors to fund dozens of programs and activities throughout the year. If you are detail-oriented and enjoy working with the public, there are numerous opportunities to volunteer in the area of fundraising.
The New York Philharmonic works diligently to maintain the consistency and visibility of its “public face” through marketing, and many of these efforts require the assistance of our volunteers.
The day-to-day operations of running America’s premiere orchestra range from filing papers and stuffing envelopes to various computer tasks. In addition, running the Volunteer Council requires substantial volunteer support.
