Halee Baldwin was seeking a project that she and her husband could fund that would enrich the musical lives of young people, and moreover, one in which Halee and David could have a meaningful participation.
Among the Philharmonic's nineteen education programs, the School Partnership Program is one of the largest, providing music education for grades 3-5 in 15 New York City public schools. The Director of Education saw in this program a perfect answer for the Baldwins. He suggested they consider endowing one of the Partnership Program's Teaching Artists.
Halee and David enthusiastically endorsed the idea and created the Halee and David Baldwin Teaching Artist Fund, endowing in perpetuity a Teaching Artist with a yearly stipend. This endowment is a first for the program, and this major gift also realizes the Baldwins' cherished wish of being partners themselves, able to observe classes, know teacher and students, and applaud their progress.
The first recipient of the Fund is violist David Wallace, who received his Doctorate in Musical Arts at Juilliard and is now a member of the Juilliard faculty. David has been a Teaching Artist at P.S. 165 since 1997. The Baldwins were delighted to learn that besides being a classical violist, David is also a fiddler with the Texas-style string band, the Doc Wallace Trio.
School Day Concerts are designed especially for either elementary or middle/high school audiences. All participants receive written and video resources to ensure an engaging and enjoyable concert experience for their students. A preparatory workshop for teachers is also provided. The New York Philharmonic presents six School Day Concerts each season, which are made possible with generous support from the Carson Family Charitable Trust.
A subscriber and Heritage Society member attended one of the concerts and decided almost before she left Avery Fisher Hall to designate her bequest to support an aspect of School Day Concerts. This donor, who has requested anonymity, would like her bequest to help fund the publication of the materials needed for School Day Concerts participants.
