It’s a Centennial Celebration!
This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the modern Philharmonic, thanks to Mary Seney Sheldon and her Guarantors’ Committee…the earliest version of today’s Friends of the Philharmonic.
Determined to make the Philharmonic “the greatest orchestra America has ever heard,” Mrs. Sheldon and her committee raised $300,000 (equal today to nearly $6.5 million) to fund the orchestra and engage Gustav Mahler as music director!
What Mary Seney Sheldon realized 100 years ago – that it would take the combined donations of many to create and sustain a great orchestra for our city – still holds true today. Now more than ever, we must depend on the generosity of our Friends to ensure our well being and our future.
This season, as we mark the 100th anniversary of the first fund raising efforts to support the Philharmonic, we are celebrating Mrs. Sheldon’s vision by establishing the New York Philharmonic Centennial Fund.
Our goal: $300,000, to match the sum raised 100 years ago.
For your gift of $250 or more to the Centennial Fund, we will be delighted to inscribe your name on an Archival document to be kept in perpetuity…right along-side the records related to Mary Seney Sheldon…to certify that your generosity helped us to meet our goal. Thank you for your support!
