For student ensembles and groups who are attending Philharmonic concerts, we offer several programs to enhance the experience.

Especially for student ensembles:

Master Classes
Selected individuals (3-5) will perform for Philharmonic members and receive critiques on their technique, sound, and musicianship while their peers listen in. Sessions last approximately 2 hours, with approximately 20-25 minutes per player.

Sectionals
Members of the Philharmonic direct a rehearsal of orchestra or band sections (strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, etc.). Students hear comments on ensemble playing, intonation, musicianship and team building. Sessions usually last 2 hours.

Clinics
A staff conductor of the New York Philharmonic leads an ensemble’s rehearsal. The clinician will work on specific areas of technique and interpretation determined in consultation with the ensemble’s director. Clinics usually last 90 minutes.

For all student groups:

Pre-Concert Talks
In the Pre-Concert Talks, a scholar will guide concert-goers through an in-depth exploration of the compositions they will hear at the concert. Talks begin one hour before concert time and last for 30 minutes.

Post-Concert Meetings
A member of the Philharmonic will meet with groups after the concert and answer questions about the music the students have just heard or what it is like to be a professional musician and play in the New York Philharmonic. Meetings last approximately 30 minutes.
