On September 17, 2008, the New York Philharmonic gave the Opening Night Concert for the Orchestra’s 167th season, a yearlong tribute titled Lorin Maazel — A Grand Finale in honor of Mr. Maazel in his seventh and final season as the Philharmonic’s Music Director.
The Live From Lincoln Center concert, which was telecast nationally on PBS, was a feast for the ears, with Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Ibert’s Flute Concerto — with the virtuoso Sir James Galway in the spotlight — and Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.
Relive the excitement and artistry of the concert here. In addition to the complete concert, our online feature includes notes on the program and a podcast, which includes host Elliott Forrest’s interview with Sir James himself.
The Opening Night Gala is generously underwritten by The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, Credit Suisse, MetLife, Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc., and Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert.
Live From Lincoln Center is produced by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc., in cooperation with Thirteen/WNET in New York.
