Anne-Sophie Mutter – The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence
One of the supreme musicians of our time, Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the Philharmonic as Artist-in-Residence for the 2010-11 season. The full range of Mutter’s artistry will be displayed in performances as orchestra soloist, chamber musician, director, and a leading champion of new music for violin and orchestra.
Hungarian Echoes: A Philharmonic Festival Conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen
Over his 30 years as a conductor and composer, Esa-Pekka Salonen has achieved worldwide renown for his brilliantly inventive and innovative approach to classics old and new. Now, in one of the signature events of the season, Salonen and the New York Philharmonic present this illuminating three-week festival featuring trailblazing composers from three different eras, each inspired by his connections to Hungary.

The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in Yiddish Theater

With archival film clips, theatrical staging, a quartet of performers and the New York Philharmonic, conductor and host Michael Tilson Thomas tells the poignant and flamboyant real-life story of Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky, who – besides being superstars of the Yiddish Theater on the Lower East Side of 100 years ago – were his beloved grandparents, directed by Patricia Birch. "Hysterically funny. . . an evening of pure pleasure." (Los Angeles Times) "This one really raises the roof." (Financial Times)
The Cunning Little Vixen

In 1924 Leos Janácek penned what is likely the most endearing opera ever inspired by a comic strip. This touching tale of the cycle of life in a European forest – featuring a brilliant orchestral score and characters as varied as the forest itself – receives its Philharmonic premiere in a colorful production conducted by Alan Gilbert and directed by Douglas Fitch.

The latest from Magnus Lindberg (The Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence), plus Rouse, Kernis, Adès, Rihm, Gubaidulina, and more. Lindberg's Kraft surrounds the audience with performers stationed throughout the hall, and Adès's In Seven Days is a combination of piano concerto and video art.
