"A dramatic musical event..."
-- The New York Times, 1943

"Triumphant..."
-- The New Yorker, 1943

"A remarkable concert..."
-- Newsweek, 1943
On the afternoon of November 14, 1943, the New York Philharmonic's assistant conductor, Leonard Bernstein, then 25, was catapulted to fame when he brilliantly substituted, without a rehearsal, for ailing guest conductor Bruno Walter. Broadcast live to a nationwide radio audience, the concert opened with Schuman's Manfred Overture and continued with Miklós Rózsa's Theme, Variations and Finale, and R. Strauss' Don Quixote.

This CD, containing both the musical program and the radio broadcast announcements, will take you back to the afternoon of November 14, 1943 as families around the nation tuned into the CBS radio network for the weekly live Philharmonic broadcast from the stage of Carnegie Hall.

The 24-page commemorative booklet contains program notes, photographs, reviews and first-hand recollections by three musicians who were on stage, Bernstein's brother, Burton, and Leonard Bernstein himself.

On the 1944 photo used for the recording's cover, Leonard Bernstein inscribed:

To the New York Philharmonic Symphony Society in deepest gratitude for giving me my great opportunity.
