In 1997 Gianandrea Noseda became the first foreign principal guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, conducting opera and ballet. He has been principal conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, England, since 2002, and recently conducted all the Beethoven symphonies there — performances that were made available free on the Internet. Chandos also released two highly acclaimed recordings of Mr. Noseda conducting works by Dvorák and Liszt with the BBC Philharmonic.

Mr. Noseda was principal guest conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra from 1999 to 2003, and has been principal conductor of the Orquestra de Cadaqués in Barcelona since 1998. Since September 2003 Mr. Noseda has been principal guest conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI. He also serves as artistic director of the festival Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore.

Mr. Noseda was born in Milan, where he began his musical studies in piano, composition, and conducting. In 1994 he won the Douai and Cadaqués conducting competitions, and made his conducting debut in 1994 with the Giuseppe Verdi Orchestra in Milan. He has appeared with numerous orchestras, and in 2001 made his debut at the Los Angeles Opera with Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, starring Plácido Domingo. In 2002 he made his Metropolitan Opera debut conducting Prokofiev’s War and Peace, which he has also conducted at Covent Garden, London, and at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. In autumn 2005 he conducts the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in addition to these New York Philharmonic concerts. He will lead Verdi’s La forza del destino in 2006 and Un ballo in maschera in the 2007–08 season at The Metropolitan Opera.
