May 26, 2003
Some 3,500 New Yorkers crowd into The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine for the Orchestra's annual free Memorial Day Concert.

February 4-9, 2003
Lorin Maazel leads the Orchestra on a tour of three Southern states, with concerts in Miami, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Atlanta, and Charlotte.


January 27, 2003
Lorin Maazel joins Executive Director Zarin Mehta and Board Chairman Paul Guenther to announce the 2003–04 season.


January 21, 2003
The stage is crowded with more than 200 musicians as Lorin Maazel shares the podium with former Philharmonic Music Director Zubin Mehta at a joint benefit concert by the New York Philharmonic and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall.


December 31, 2002
The Orchestra, under the direction of Lorin Maazel, rings in the New Year with an all-Gershwin New Year's Eve Concert on the flower-bedecked stage of Avery Fisher Hall. The concert was telecast live on PBS's Live From Lincoln Center.




December 19-21, 2002
Lorin Maazel leads the World Premiere of the New York Philharmonic Commission The Enchanted Wanderer by Rodion Shchedrin.




December 7, 2002
The Philharmonic turns 160. Lorin Maazel leads the Orchestra and soprano Deborah Voigt in a festive birthday program to mark the occasion.


October 13-30, 2002
Lorin Maazel leads the Orchestra on Part II of the 2002 Citigroup Asian Tour to Beijing, Manila, Hong Kong, Macau, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.

September 19, 2002
John Adams's On the Transmigration of Souls, a New York Philharmonic Commission, receives its world premiere performance under the baton of Lorin Maazel. The work would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music.


September 18, 2002
On Opening Night Lorin Maazel conducts an all-Beethoven program, including the Ninth Symphony.


September 17, 2002
Lorin Maazel conducts the Philharmonic in his first rehearsal as Music Director.
