Special Editions Label
From the Executive Director, Zarin Mehta

In 1997, the New York Philharmonic took the unprecedented step of launching a new recording label, New York Philharmonic Special Editions, and offered as its inaugural release a collection of historic performances from six decades of live radio broadcasts. The public and critical enthusiasm for the set, The Historic Broadcasts 1923 to 1987, was stunning. Nominated for two Grammy Awards, The Historic Broadcasts won the prestigious Heritage Award from National Public Radio and the Best Orchestral Award in the historic category from Gramophone magazine's ICRC.

Building on the success of the first set, we released our second collection in 1998. The Mahler Broadcasts 1948-1982 demonstrates the Orchestra's unrivaled affinity for Mahler. The 12-CD set received the German Critics' Award and was nominated for the ICRC Award.

In 1999, we presented An American Celebration, a 10-CD set that explores the Orchestra's relationship to American music. It is fitting that the orchestra that has been in continuous operation for two-thirds of our nation's existence document and exalt its enduring kinship to American music. In presenting New York Philharmonic: An American Celebration, the Orchestra continues to expand the range of possibilities for the next millennium, to commemorate the past, and imagine the future.

In 2000, we released Bernstein Live, a 10-CD set of live recordings led by Leonard Bernstein, who served as the Philharmonic's Music Director from 1958 to 1969, and as its Laureate Conductor from 1969 to 1990. The critically acclaimed set exemplifies Bernstein's boldness and determination as a Music Director, as well as his impact on the Philharmonic and the modern concert format. In the same year, we also released Sweeney Todd: Live at the New York Philharmonic, which documents the first live recording of Stephen Sondheim's great musical in twenty years.

In 2001, we released Kurt Masur at the New York Philharmonic, a 10-CD set that pays tribute to Maestro Masur's tenure as Music Director. Affirming the breadth of Maestro's musical achievements, the collection features classics of the Orchestra's repertoire, as well as new and contemporary works by composers he has championed from all over the world. Each of these recordings is made possible by the generous support of Rita E. and Gustave M. Hauser.
